Parkville and Weatherby Lake

Parkville: Parkville was established in the 1800s by Colonel George S. Park, a war veteran turned land speculator. He purchased the land and a riverboat landing in 1838 and began development with warehouses and a hotel. The town quickly grew, outpacing nearby Kansas City as fur trappers and traders enjoyed the convenience of its location. At that time, Missouri River ran closer to the center of town than it does presently allowing Parkville’s river port to flourish. The good times, however, were broken up by politics. The issue of slavery split the town in half, causing riots and violence and eventually destroying the town’s economy.

Today, Parkville is a suburb to Kansas City, which absorbed the heavy commerce of early Parkville. The primary attractions are Parkville’s English Landing Park and nearby Weston Bend State Park. Downtown Parkville, lined with antique and craft stores and lovely restaurants, is also a charming destination in its own right. Additionally, there are many history and art museums in Kansas City and the surrounding communities.

English Landing Park is approximately 64 acres of lush scenery along the Missouri River. The park is located just outside of downtown and offers a safe retreat for anyone wanting to relax within a gorgeous landscape. Walking, picnicking and team sports are popular here, as visitors make use of the paved trails, shelters and athletic fields. Weatherby Lake visitors can enjoy a sand beach, picnic and greenbelt areas, plus ample public access to the water.

Weston Bend State Park is located about 20 miles northwest of Parkville. Covering over 1,100 acres, the park provides plenty of room for exploration. Weston Bend is known for excellent bird watching due to the thick forests that cover the area, but the park is also used for hiking, biking and picnicking. The scenic views of the Missouri River and neighboring woodlands at Weston Bend are not to be missed.

Weatherby Lake: With a population of just over 1800 residents, the community of Weatherby Lake embraces its small town charm. Just 14 miles away from Missouri City, residents also enjoy the close proximity to big city amenities. Recreational activities are popular among residents as the community offers a wide selection of programs. Park Plaza Shopping center and the new sensational Zona Rosa shopping area are is minutes away and boasts a wide selection of stores. For additional recreational activities Hayes Creek is also nearby.
